Perhaps the writing that I read the most is on the subject of soccer, so it is no surprise that it is from here that my example hails. Jonathan Wilson is a regular writer for the Manchester Guardian, among other publications and he, more than any other writer, truly conveys the depth that there is to the beautiful game.

Wislon has an incredibly extensive knowledge of soccer and clearly dedicates much of his life to researching his information. As with this example, Wilson frequently goes into intricate technical and tactical details about soccer that most people, even ardent fans, don't even consider. He also frequently takes the reader on a historical tour through the development of the sport.

With all this detailed information in his articles, it is to Wilson's great credit that his writing is still so engaging and pleasurable to read.

In this particular article Wilson tracks the history of one of soccer's key positions on the field, the playmaker. Delving into nearly 150 years of soccer history, Wilson's careful use of language and the structure of his writing means that even casual fans will be rewarded for this read.

All About Me

After spending a year studying media and culture beneath the overcast sky of London, I decided to head for sunnier climes and onto an exchange program at SJSU. After falling in love with the area I decided to transfer here permanently and am now a graduating print journalism major.

After completing an internship with them, I am now a regular writer for Revolver magazine. Something of a dream gig for me, the magazine is one of the foremost publications covering rock music. Already I have been lucky enough to interview some of my idols, including Stone Temple Pilot's frontman Scott Weiland and Aerosmith's Joey Kramer.

My other main area of interest, when it comes to both hobbies in general and writing, is sports. This summer I contributed to reports on the FIFA World Cup for the soccer magazine 90:00 Soccer.

After graduating I hope to further my wiring experience in both of these areas. If I am able to make a good living from something that gives me so much pleasure then I will be a very happy and lucky man.

As far as my writing goes, I would say my main weaknesses are concerned with not making my writing snappy enough. I often struggle to write those short sharp sentences that are necessary to mix in with the longer descriptive sentences. I would definitely say that I need to work on making my point more succinctly at times.

Although I am sure that I do possess some skills as a writer, to me writing is all about constantly learning and improving. Something which I am sure will continue with this class.
